Guwahati: The Cachar District Administration has announced to close all educational institutes in view of river Barak crossing the danger level.

In this regard, the district administration has issued a notification, wherein, it stated the decision was taken after the Barak river flowed above the danger level on Saturday.

"In view of the river Barak crossing the danger level on 18th June 2022 and in anticipation of heavy rainfall for next few days in Cachar District as per reports received from Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, do hereby direct that all Educational Institutions (Govt. or Private) & Non-Essential Private Establishments of Cachar District shall remain closed for next 48 hours," the notification added.

The district administration has also mandated a two-day halt of vehicular movement so that rescue operations can be expedited.

On the other hand, due to the overtopping of flood water, a 3-km stretch on the Silchar-Kumbhirgram VIP road got closed for all vehicular movements. Passengers landing at Silchar airport will now be diverted through Lathigram road. NDRF and SDRF personnel have been rescuing people from various parts of the districts.

The administration had opened a good number of relief camps.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that an inter-ministerial central team will arrive in Assam soon to assess the damage caused by the prevailing flood situation in Assam.

As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have affected 47,72,140 people of 5,424 villages in 32 districts in the State. A total of 2,31,819 inmates are taking shelter in 810 relief camps in the State while seven persons are missing for the last 24 hours.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara, and Dhubri.
